Summary

This tool collects electronic supermarket sales data via hand-held barcode scanning terminals, random checks were conducted at the payment checkout. Food purchases were converted to nutrient purchases using a supermarket food and nutrient database. The tool was developed as little is known about how sales data reflect the nutrients consumed by an individual household member. The tool was validated in 2010.

Alcohol intake was excluded from the analysis. The population was predominantly female with a high level of education and income compared with the general New Zealand population.
